Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:03:26 GMT

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — After having both its coach and best winger sent off last week, Barcelona will try to jump start its Spanish season on Sunday at home.Except home isn’t what it used to be.Barcelona will play its first official game in its temporary home against Cadiz while Camp Nou undergoes an extensive makeover, and coach Xavi Hernández will be watching from the stands.Xavi was sent off for excessively complaining about the decisions of the referee during his team’s 0-0 draw at Getafe in their season opener last week. The former midfielder was handed a two-game suspension for his behavior. The hosts will also be missing forward Raphinha, who earned a red card against Getafe when he elbowed an opposing player. That leaves Barcelona without a pure winger, after Ousmane Dembélé left for Paris Saint-Germain in the offseason. The empty spot in the starting lineup could be filled by forwards Ferran Torres or Ansu Fati, or another midfielder like Gavi Páez. Former Manchester ...

DENVER (Stacker) — The U.S. may be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but financial inequality prevails within its borders. That divide is growing, especially between the poorest and richest U.S. residents. The middle class is shrinking. In 2021, just half of adults lived in a middle-income household, a huge drop from 61% in the 70s. This dip meant some middle-class adults broke into the high-income bracket. At the same time, the share of lower-income residents is growing: 29% of adults lived in low-income households in 2021, compared to 25% in 1971.Wages over this period grew at all income levels, but the rich got significantly higher bumps. Pew Charitable Trusts found that high incomes grew 69% over the past 50 years, while low incomes grew just 45%. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated and further exposed these harsh financial gaps. 2 Colorado cities ranked among best for side gigs The difference in pay for the highest- and lowest-paying jobs in the U.S. last year was o...

The world shed 3.5 million millionaires in 2022 as market losses drained wealth at the top

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:03:26 GMT

New York (CNN) — Last year, as interest rates rose and inflation stayed stubbornly high, total household wealth declined for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. That might sound like bad news, but the numbers tell a more optimistic story. Here’s the deal: The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report. Much of that was due to losses in stock and bond markets, which disproportionately affect wealthier people.Meanwhile, global median wealth, a more meaningful indicator of how the typical person is faring, actually rose 3% in 2022.In short, the average Joe got a bit of a boost and a bunch of millionaires and billionaires took a bath — a phenomenon some refer to as a “rich-cession.”(For the record: The report defines net worth or “wealth” as the value of a household’s financial assets and real assets, like property, minus their debts.)The drain on wealth at the top means th...

The start of Ryan O’Hearn’s major league career in many ways coincided with the beginning of the Orioles’ rebuild. His debut for the Kansas City Royals came July 31, 2018, the same day Baltimore completed its series of teardown trades. O’Hearn’s first full season was 2019, the same year the Orioles and Royals respectively made the first two picks in the draft.Four years later, Kansas City remains one of the majors’ worst teams, while O’Hearn is a key member of a Baltimore team that has grown into one of the best. This week, MLB Pipeline recognized the Orioles as baseball’s No. 1 farm system for the fifth straight rankings — with Baltimore once again possessing the top-ranked prospect — while the major league team holds the American League’s best record.
