Kicked off Medicaid: Millions at risk as states trim rolls

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:37:15 GMT

By AMANDA SEITZ and ANITA SNOW (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Days out from a surgery and with a young son undergoing chemotherapy, Kyle McHenry was scrambling to figure out if his Florida family will still be covered by Medicaid come Monday. One form on the state’s website said coverage for their sick 5-year-old son, Ryder, had been denied. But another said the family would remain on Medicaid through next year. Still, a letter from the state said McHenry now makes too much money for him, his wife and their older son to qualify after the end of the month. Three phone calls and a total of six frustrating hours on hold with Florida’s Department of Children and Families later, the McHenrys finally got the answer they were dreading on Thursday: Most of the family is losing Medicaid coverage, although Ryder remains eligible because of his illness.“I’m trying not to go into panic,” McHenry’s wife, Allie McHenry, told The Associated Press earli...

Failure to evacuate UK citizens in the Sudan should come as no surprise

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:37:15 GMT

The failure to evacuate UK citizens in the Sudan by the UK government and foreign office should come as no surprise to UK residents living overseas, writes Sara Page, vice chairwoman of European Britons. It may however come as a bit of a shock to passport holders in the UK.For some very strange reason neither the UK government or their foreign office consider it their duty to go to the aid of UK passport holding citizens abroad, so UK travellers beware when booking your next foreign holiday. However, the “gruesome twosome” do believe that they have a duty of care to their staff working overseas and therefore pull out all the stops to ensure their safety. Where, however, they draw the line and on what basis they draw the line between the two groups of passport holding UK citizens is an anathema to me.My first encounter of this peculiar rule was within my first six months of living in France and the Anglican Church group that I belong to was contacted by a local Mairie who had deep conc...

The City of Hermosa Beach will consider a plan to change the start times of parking meters by two hours next month. The start time to pay to park is 10 a.m. but under the new plan, drivers would have to start paying at 8 a.m. Some surfers against the motion say that they will most likely end up finding parking on residential streets.  Secure parking lot for unhoused people coming to Los Angeles County City officials believe that starting the parking meter pay time two hours earlier will help free up parking spaces in the small 1.4 square mile city where parking is always a challenge. The city is expected to make $1.8 million from a parking rate increase approved earlier this year. The city council will vote on the issue on May 9.

Fed autopsy on SVB faults bank’s management — and its own oversight

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:37:15 GMT

The Federal Reserve detailed serious management oversights by the executives of Silicon Valley Bank, which collapsed six weeks ago and sent financial markets reeling. In a hotly anticipated report released Friday morning, the Fed, which is SVB’s primary regulator, took responsibility for its own lapses, saying that supervisors “did not fully appreciate the extent of the vulnerabilities as Silicon Valley Bank grew in size and complexity” and “did not take sufficient steps” to ensure that SVB address its problems quickly. It recommended a sweeping re-evaluation of its regulatory and supervisory functions.“Following Silicon Valley Bank’s failure, we must strengthen the Federal Reserve’s supervision and regulation based on what we have learned,” said Michael Barr, the Fed’s vice chair for supervision. “This review represents a first step in that process.”At the time of its failure, SVB had 31 unaddressed “safe a...
