(CNN) — Investigators are continuing to scour the ocean floor for any insight into how a “catastrophic implosion” killed all five passengers of a Titanic-bound submersible that suddenly lost communication with its mother ship over the weekend, officials said.A dayslong international search effort concluded Thursday after debris from the submersible – known as the Titan – was found about 1,600 feet from the historic wreckage of the Titanic. (CNN) — Russia’s domestic intelligence service has opened a criminal case against Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of private military group Wagner, after he appeared to cross a red line with the Kremlin on Friday when he vowed to retaliate against the country’s military leadership for what he described as strikes launched against his forces. The open confrontation was sparked by a series of Telegram posts on Friday, where Prigozhin accused Russian forces of striking a Wagner military camp. “A huge amount of our fighters were killed,” he said, in a radical escalation of a longstanding feud with Russia’s military leaders.Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied the claims, calling it an “informational provocation.”The mercenary, who has frequently criticized Russia’s traditional military hierarchy, then warned that retribution would be meted out. “We will deal with those who destroy Russian soldiers and return to the front, justice for the troops will be restored, and then justice fo...

With the Mets trailing their NL East rivals 2-0, the club announced the trade for right-handers Coleman Crow and Landon Marceaux, both of whom are Double-A starters.Escobar, a 34-year-old Venezuelan third baseman, has had a tough season, though you wouldn’t know it by his upbeat demeanor. There was pressure for him to perform this spring with Baty, one of the Mets’ top prospects, knocking at the door. He struggled during the World Baseball Classic and in spring training. He failed to hit during the early part of the season and the Mets were forced to call up Baty in late April.Escobar performed well in a reserve role, hitting .394 with two home runs in the month of May, but he’s come back down again, going 4-...

Sights and sounds from London Stadium: Chicago Cubs expect high-scoring games this weekend. ‘The ball flies out of here.’

A big smile broke across Christopher Morel’s face.Morel had just finished batting practice Friday afternoon on a humid workout day at London Stadium before the Chicago Cubs’ two-game weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals.“From what I can tell, the ball flies out of here,” Morel said through an interpreter.London Stadium, home to Premier League’s West Ham United, originally was built and created for the track and field events at the 2012 Olympics. It was designed to minimize wind and air flow in the stadium in an effort to reduce weather’s impact on events. The unique wind dynamics made the pitch-turned-diamond an offensive haven during the 2019 London Series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox when they combined for 50 runs in two games. The distance of the outfield wall in center field was pushed back 7 feet while the power alleys gained an additional 5 feet for this series. US intelligence report on COVID-19 origins rejects some points raised by lab leak theory proponents

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 17:27:06 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials released an intelligence report Friday that rejected several points raised by those who argue COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese lab, instead reiterating that American spy agencies remain divided over how the pandemic began. The report was issued at the behest of Congress, which in March passed a bill giving U.S. intelligence 90 days to declassify intelligence related to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Intelligence officials during the Biden administration have been pushed by lawmakers to release more material about the origins of COVID-19. But they have repeatedly argued China’s official obstruction of independent reviews has made it perhaps impossible to determine how the pandemic began. The newest report is likely to anger Republicans who say the administration is wrongly withholding classified information and researchers who accuse the U.S. of not being forthcoming. There was newfound interest from researchers following the revelation earlier ...
